I walked into a brisk wind, uphill on 20th Street South, trying to find the J. Clyde, the noted beer bar where I was supposed to meet Stuart Carter, current president of Free the Hops, but I could not find it anywhere. Standing on the corner of Cobb Lane, a rough brick alley, I called Carter on my cell phone to ask where it was, and in a thick Scottish accent he told me I was basically there already. About midway down Cobb Lane, on a row of tucked-away shoppes, was the low-slung pub I was looking for. It wasn’t much warmer inside, but the bar was crowded with people ready to watch Alabama play Florida for the SEC championship. Stuart arrived not long after I did, and we sat in a booth to talk about Alabama, beer, and the precarious relationship between the two, in the midst of periodic hurrahs when Alabama made a big play.
