Bill Perkins described himself in our interview as a professional trouble-maker, through his role as the editorial page editor of the "Dothan Eagle." The newspaper serves, by his estimate, about 65,000 people in the Houston County area of southeastern Alabama. We talked in his dimly lit office full of oddities and memorabilia about life in small towns and the myth that truly successful people don't stay in Alabama. Bill Perkins, who was wearing a HARVARD sweatshirt that day, leaned back in his big office chair and expounded his ideas on a life spent in one of the lower corners of Alabama, commenting publicly on what he sees.
