Interview with Scott Peek, Printer and Promoter

Waverly, Alabama is an odd little community. I had seen the design on t-shirts and bags –  “Waverly, Pop. 225” – the current population is only about 180 – but there’s a lot packed in. The community, which has not only its typical rural folks but also a significant Auburn University-related overflow, is situated such that it is in three counties: Lee (mainly), Chambers and Tallapoosa. I went to Waverly in late February to interview designer and screen printer Scott Peek, owner of Standard Deluxe. Surrounded by his “Real Southern Vernacular Postmodern Eclectic” artworks and blasting reggae music, I had to wait for a bit while Scott and his friend Dave finished a print run of a job someone waiting desperately for. Once he got done, Scott and I sat down in the loft of his home/print shop on that cold Sunday afternoon to talk about Auburn, Standard Deluxe, music, and living as an artist in a small rural community.
